Who are you?

I was born in the mecca of Wingham, Ontario  in 1969.  I now live in the mecca of Leith, Ontario, which is located about 180 km north of Toronto, just outside of Owen Sound.  My main roles in life are husband, father, teacher, and photographer.  I have been accused of being intellectual, philosophical, idealistic, naive, cynical, fool-hardy, arrogant, self-serving, and attention-seeking.  I don’t think I am any of these, but I do think I can change the world.

What do you know about photography?

I was never taught how to take pictures, although I have evidence of using a camera at a young age - that’s me in the lovely red sweater and striped jump suit.  In fact, I only started taking ‘photos’ in my early 20’s after my parents returned from a trip to Germany with a Minolta SLR for me.  For many years I took numerous lousy, but important pictures.

Two things changed this.  The first was the arrival of a digital camera that I talk about in my first post.  The second was teaching High School media.  Although I have very little training in media studies - but a lot of interest - I was given an opportunity to teach both the theory behind and the practical elements of photography.  By teaching, I learned - an opportunity that everyone should have.

Why "Some Good Noise"?

I explain most of that in my first post, too.  I should also say that I see this photoblog as part of a larger website that will challenge society in other ways.  I am optimistic that our world can right itself and I feel compelled to contribute my part.  It is terribly cliche, but I do believe "The truth can set us free".

How do I get around this site?

If you are here for the first time, it would make the most sense to start at the beginning, since I often refer to previous posts in my entries.  If you are a returning visitor, you probably know by now that you can click on both sides of each photo to navigate the site.  The ‘Archive’ button will take you to thumbnail versions of the past 50 posts.  You can also view them by category or tag here.  When viewing photos, clicking on "comments" will open a pop-up where you can share your thoughts.

Do you sell your photos?

Yes I do.  Please visit Good Noise Photography and click on the ‘Prints/Usage’ icon.

Why should I purchase one of your photos?

Well, hopefully first, because you really like it.

But, being totally honest, I would love to make enough money from my photography to only have to teach part-time, so I can devote more energy to photography.  I am sure this will make me a better photographer and I am positive it will make me a better teacher.  In fact, this is something I believe all teachers should have to do - work outside the school - as school is very isolating.

And I don’t even want to consider advertising - not only is it a distraction to the photos, but I also find it offensive that ads have to be everywhere, including my blog.

So, if you like a photo, you like what I am trying to do here and you would like to support my photography, please purchase a print.

Can I hire you to take pictures?

Sure you can.  Please visit Good Noise Photography to find out how.

What is your favourite thing about photography?

As Dorothea Lange said "the camera is an instrument that teaches people how to see without a camera".  Thanks to my camera, I have a greater appreciation for our world.

Any last thoughts?

I’ll end where I began.  In a way, I am telling the story of my life.

Peace, Happiness
